Treasure
Cay Primary School
Programs
and Financial Statement
The 2012-2013
school year has seen many successfully sponsored programs in the Library, Art Classes, Lunch
Program, Classroom Reading, Uniforms, Workbooks, Shoes, etc. I am thrilled with the progress I have seen
in the last ten years at the Treasure
Cay Primary School. Great strides have
been made in all areas.
PROGRAMS:
Free
Lunch Program
Thirty-three
children receive a free lunch each school day that includes protein, starch,
vegetable,
fresh fruit and fruit juice. It is sad but true that this is sometimes the only
meal a child may get each day. Many thanks to the people who have either donated
to this program or sponsored a child for a year. The good news is that we have
enough money left to start the program early in the fall. Nelrose Parker, the cook, continues to do an
outstanding job providing healthy meals.
She is also good about giving extra food or tea to children who have had no breakfast or food in special
situations.
**** As
homeowners start to leave for the summer and are cleaning out their cupboards
and
refrigerators please remember to leave off your leftovers at the school kitchen.
It can all be used to feed the children.
Art
Classes
Each classroom
from grade 1 to grade 6 received art instruction each week for five
months. This
year two of the Treasure Cay sixth graders placed in the art
show in Marsh
Harbour sponsored by the Bahamian National Trust. Gerry Belot, a grade six student from the
farm, won $200. In a cruise ship poster contest! !As you could all see at the children’s art
show this past March, they just continue to get better and better! I am delighted that we can provide this
creative outlet for the students.
Library
Grades 3-6
come to the library once a week to return and checkout new books. It has
been very
rewarding to see the library use grow over the last ten years. The children
now come in
requesting books. We actually have to replace books because they are
getting worn
out. What a great problem to have!! Many children are now reading 2-3
books each
week. There has been a real increase in
the use of nonfiction books this year.
We have been able to add many new books to the shelves this winter to the delight of the children.
Reading
to Classes
Each class,
grades 2-6, has someone come in and read to them each week for six months.
The children
love being read to and it exposes them to literature that they might not be
able to read
on their own. Many thanks to Marge Chance, Suzie Chew, Paige and Paul
Hammond, and
Marcia Mazeine who have done this for the winter. The first grades are
read to before
their art class each week.
Uniforms
and Shoes
We have been able to provide 49 P.E. uniforms and 41 pairs of used
sneakers as well as some black uniform shoes.
Sneakers and shoes are a real problem with many children needing
them. If each of you could bring one
pair of used sneakers next fall we could really help these children!!! We need all sizes from child to adult.
Daron
Roberts/Abaco Insurance Tournament
Thank you for donating half of the money from soft drinks to our lunch
program.
Christmas
Party
Many thanks to
Peggy Shelly for organizing the Christmas Party once again.
Veronica
Henderson for going to Miami and buying all the gifts and the
staff for
wrapping the gifts; Tom Wheeler for raising money; and Abaco Groceries,
Abaco
Insurance and Abaco Estates Real Estate for donating food. Each child received
a hot dog, juice and ice cream cone as well as a gift appropriate to their age
and gender.
Treasure
Cay Art League
Thank you for
the generous donation toward art supplies. This donation and the profit
from the
children’s art show make the art program possible. I teach 161 students each
week for six
months – the art supplies really add up!! The support of the Art League is
deeply
appreciated.
Workbooks
This year we
became aware of many children who could not afford to buy their workbooks which
are an essential part of their classroom work.
Through a generous donation we were able to provide 144 workbooks for the
children. We already have $1000 in this
fund for next year and we would like to add to the fund.
Bill Chew
Special thanks
to Bill Chew and his wood working skills.
He cuts all of the wood pieces used for art and we would be lost without
him.
Helga Sachno
Many
thanks to Helga for coming out twice a
week and teaching knitting to a group of students at lunch time. They are so proud of their scarves!
Women’s Golf League
Many thanks to
the women for their donation. The money
was used to buy uniform shoes for needy children.
Cay Events
Thank you for
sponsoring a child in the lunch program and allowing some children to attend
events free.
Rosemary Roberts Library
We thank the
library for donating books, Creole dictionaries, a used dishwasher and a
library book rack.
Pam
Himes
Pam handles
all of the financial records relating to the programs, handles many aspects of
the library and assists with art classes. It is a big job and I couldn’t do it
without her

I thank you
all for donating time and money to make these
programs
possible. Please be assured that every penny of money
you donate to
these programs goes directly to the programs through Pam Himes and myself. I
hope knowing you are making a big
difference in
the lives and education of these children is as
rewarding for
you as it is for me. The programs incur ongoing

tried to show you in the financial statement above.
Hoping to have
you all (and others!) on board again next year.
